The Curt Schilling Experiment

After last night's debacle, we have been reassured that Schilling is not the Schilling of last year, and that he's not really suited for the closer role.

Although he's converted 9 of 11 save opportunities, most have been "cheap" saves. Here's the breakdown of his saves, by Red Sox leads:

4 run lead: 1 save
3 run lead: 5 saves
2 run lead: 2 saves
1 run lead: 1 save

Um, why not try out Mike Timlin?

It's clear watching Schill during his experiment that he is nowhere near 100%. His fastball is erratic. He hangs his splitter too much. He makes too many mistakes with two strikes. As a result, teams are tattooing him. Even the outs are loud.

I still like Timlin as the set-up man. If we take him out of that role, we weaken the set-up man spot. I'm all for bringing up Craig Hansen. Kid signed a major league contract. He throws high 90's gas and has just filthy stuff. His control is also excellent. He was the primary closer at St. John's, so it's not like he'd be walking into unfamiliar territory. If anybody can come in and do what K-Rod did for Anaheim in '02, it's Hansen. Heck, what do we have to lose at this point?

You got your wish with Timlin at closer- but dude is just like his predecessors- he can't enter the 9th inning without threatening to blow the lead.

Guy came in with a 5-nothing lead the other night. You don't bring your closer into a game up five runs. As it turns out, he threw a needless 34 pitches and nearly blew the game. Why not keep Gonzalez in for one more inning?

The following night, we saw exactly why you don't bring in your closer in low leverage situations. Because there's a chance you could have a high leverage situation the next night where you might actually need a rested closer! Tito get a clue my man!

Guy ended up laboring through another 9th inning- this time throwing 26 pitches. That's 60 pitches in two nights for an already overworked closer. See ya at Fenway Timmy! We're probably gonna need you today too with Curt on a pitch count.
